Goodwood deconstruction blocks are a new system of innovative wooden blocks, designed to invite real creative play. The beautiful, precisely crafted blocks are intentionally packaged without instructions or other prescriptive guidelines, in order to cultivate open-ended exploration. Unlike most modern toys, this puts the child in complete control of the child-toy relationship, and encourages them to come up with their own ways to play. The different shapes allow for building outwards in every dimension, and the creation of structures which are both architecturally and geometrically interesting, as well as visually pleasing. They are suitable as a construction toy for children, and increasingly popular as a desk toy for design-minded adults as well.

The ever-growing goodwood system currently includes seven original designs. Each set is designed to be fun and interesting on its own, and to provide new features when combined with the other sets as well. All sets come with pieces in six vibrant colors (water-based acrylic paint), made from forest-friendly rubber wood, and CPSIA tested. Care has been taken to ensure that the product reflects responsible social and environmental decision-making, and the developer's website provides a mechanism for purchasing discounted sets for donation into orphanages and kindergartens in the developing world.

Towers, patterns, and more

My three year old son loves building towers of all descriptions, but I wanted to mix things up a bit, and these blocks do that perfectly. Each block is a 'C' shape, so two can interlock to form an 'X', and the 'X's can be stacked. The blocks can also be stacked a series of 'little bridges' as my son likes to call them, and you can stack them with each block positioned perpendicular to the other to create a different configuration, which can be a great 'turn taking' exercise. They have also been used to create a bridge over a river (aka a blue piece of fabric). I've also created some interesting configurations with these blocks and photographed them, then ask my son to try and reproduce the configuration - great brain stretching exercise! An alternative to photographing them might be to purchase two sets. The first set we received had one block that was too loose to fit well with the others, but I contacted the manufacturer and they were wonderful about responding promptly and sending a replacement. We also got a set of the Goodwood 'M' blocks, and they have been a wonderful addition to our block collection, already having been used as people (that can hug!), robots, dogs, and dinosaurs. Their simple design lets the imagination run wild. In short, I love these blocks and plan to purchase more of the Goodwood Deconstruction blocks in the future. They are definitely one of those toys that I will be holding onto for future generations.
